The High Tratas are known as the smallest mountains in the world and even nicknamed "Alps in miniature": indeed, only 16 miles (26 km) of length, the chain has ten peaks of more than 8530 feet of altitude (2 600 meters). One of the things that attracts so many people to this national park is the large number of its peaks above 8200 feet (2500 m): 25 in total. The High Tatras are one of the few regions in Europe outside the Alps that have retained their mountainous character, and the diversity of the landscape is very impressive. There are green valleys, dense forests of beech and Carpathian fir, high meadows up to 6561 feet (2000 m) and arid stony soils with mountain lakes. The diversity of landscapes that drives humans to explore also attracts many animals, including three of Europe's five large mammals. Brown bears, wolves and Eurasian lynx can all spice up your day of adventure. There is nothing like a hike to discover the unique charms of the High Tatras. There are a series of red (long or difficult), blue (intermediate) or green and yellow (connecting route) trails available, so there is something for every level! If you don't have time to walk the entire High Tratas, try one of its most picturesque sections; Strbske pleso, a lake often said to be the most beautiful in the world, it is the starting point of a 3-hour hike through the forest that leads around another marvelous lake, Popradske pleso.
